What is NOUN

The National Open University of Nigeria is a credited and license world class Federal-Government University that is also called Open and Distance Learning (ODL) university in Nigeria, it is the first of its kind in the whole of West African sub-region. It is Nigeria's biggest tertiary university in terms of student populations.
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) was formally established on the 22nd of July 1983 as a millstone for open and online distance learning in Nigeria. It was initially suspended by the federal government on April 25th 1984. However, its resuscitation began on April 12th 2001 by Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo At the launching of the university, the initial student enrollment rose to 32,400.
In 2015, NOUN students populations rose to 57,759 students. The Vice Chancellor of this great institution is Prof. Vincent Tenebe . The National Open University of Nigeria operations are from its National Administrative Headquarters in Lagos Nigeria, with different Study Centers scattered throughout the country. It is currently offering over 50 academic programs and 750 distance courses. NOUN originally does not offer lectures to students in normal classrooms settings apart from some of the study centers in the country. The academic study center in Lagos for example offers lectures to all the Law undergraduates students and gives necessary course materials and advices to students after tuition.

Noun Registrar is the one serving as the Secretary to the Council and Senate bodies.it unique Registry Department’s primary assignments is to give support and relevant services in the General Administration of the National Open University of Nigeria with emphasis on all Council affairs, raising Senate matters, the recruitment of Staff, the admission of students/welfare, all the Staff welfare and other related matters.
The academic registrar is in the person of Mrs. Josephine Olasumbo Akinyemi.


Noun Rankings and Achievements

The Latest ranking and achievements results,released by the Ranking Web of Universities (commonly known as Webometrics) has produced another list of the Best 100 Universities in Nigeria for 2015 academic sessions. Just as it's always done in every other web ranking results, webometrics  2015 webranking adopted search queries from different search engines to rank the top national, state and private universities which the National Open University ranked 23rd.

The deliberate decision of the senate and management of the National Open University Nigeria(NOUN) to establish different study centers in some of the nation’s prisons have already started yielding fruits as 3 inmates were among the numbers of over 7,000 that recently graduated from the 13-year-old national institute. At its 4th convocation ceremony that was held in the prestigious Exhibition Hall of the Nigeria National Theatre located at  Iganmu, in the ever busy Lagos state, that is the southwestern area of Nigeria, was witnessed by the representative of Mr. President the commander in chief of the arm forces Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, many academic  Vice Chancellors of different universities, national and state governing council with lots of the Senate members and other key stakeholders, the two inmates(prisoners) from the Nigeria Kirikiri Maximum Prisons became the star attraction apart from the two NOUN First Class graduates that was produced by this Great institute for the first time.

But various attempts by Educational Review to speak with the inmates were totally resisted by the female prison official in charge. However, the vice (Deputy) Controller that is in charge of Kirikiri Maximum prison told Educational Review something interesting that one of the Nigeria inmates, is serving his entire life in the prison while the other inmate whom he refuse revealing his name was released two weeks later immediately after he have serve his jail term. Mr. Oladapo and the second prison inmates that was just release(discharged) were awarded their first university degree which is BSc in Peace and Conflict Resolution, the exact same course the overall best student  Mrs. Anthonia Okoye that is 43 years of age a happy mother who was among one of the first two NOUN graduates to come out (graduate) with a First-Class degree from the National Open University Of Nigeria(NOUN) Nigeria.

The National Open University(NOUN) iLearn Portal Technology
The National Open University of Nigeria(NOUN) in all its works and effort of fulfilling the vision of carrying tertiary education to every doorstep of the Nigerian population irrespective of their social and economic status has implemented and deployed the first ever iLearn portal technology in Nigeria to enhance student’s online learning experience. The N.O.U.N. internet learning (iLearn) platform was created to help and ease the access to excellent and quality education. The iLearn platform provides many features some of which are listed below for easy learning:

Online virtual class discussions
This is organized by NOUN facilitators themselves thereby creating an interacting virtual classroom environment in Nigeria. When asked by the education review, a distinctive student Mr. Monday Great Alabi from the Benin Study Centre with Matric Number (nou120546162)who is well known for his creative and innovative abilities in science and technology gave a wonderful insight on this academic social development, He said "iLearn based learning model is an educational practice whereby students interact with one another to solve problems, for me it is called cooperative learning because it is a learning model for everyone, by everyone, about almost anything. No matter the context whether formal or informal learning context, iLearn based model manifests aspects of self-development that are often absent from instructional models of teaching and learning. Because ,it is as if we are a part of a large organization where numerous people are always updating a shared database. We as students will also benefit from our shared ideas"

NOUN Computer-Based-Test (CBT)

The Nigeria National Open University is currently administering the Computer-Based-Test (CBT) kind of examination to all its students in the first and second academic years respectively However, Law undergraduates also participate in the standardize Pen-On-Paper(POP) examination beginning from the second year of their five years course duration in NOUN. Other NOUN undergraduates also take part(participate) in the CBT system online examination in their respective first and second academic years before commencing their POP examinations from the third year till the very end of their course period. The NOUN POP examination system also applies to all the Post Graduate students.
The Nigeria National Open University (NOUN) CBT method of examination was however bombarded by some of the students in the school. The online CBT examination is divided into two categories; the multiple choice questions that is also known as the objective(OBJ) and also fill in the gap category also known as the JAMBITES - which is one of the frightening examination method known by most students studying all over the world.

The online CBT system usually demands all the students to memorize a large portion of their textbooks or course materials in accordance with the system programmed answers that is stored on the computers server in order for them to obtain their full marks as computers will not accept answers that is different or do not match its programmed language content.

NOUN Assessment
The Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs) are very important continuous assessments method in form of the Tutor Marked Assignment test and it's accounts for 30% of the student's total marks (score). All the Students are expected and it's mandatory to answer at least four of their various TMAs, the major three of which must be submitted by answering them correctly before they sit for the end of the course examination.

NOUN Final Examination and Grading
With all the examinations written successfully, The last which is the end of course examinations in that semester would earn students 70% which usually would be added to all their TMA score (30%). The accurate time and dates of every examination is always announce and communicated to students through online medium and also their various study centers.
